Why this location is so special
The Caledonian Forest is the name for the former (ancient old-growth) temperate rainforest of Scotland. The Scots pines of the Caledonian Forest are directly descend from the original pines to arrive in Scotland following the end of the ice age approx 7000 BC.
The Caledonian forest is a truly unique ecosystem in the British Isles – a remnant of the wilderness that once existed and is a home to very rare and unusual wildlife species. Mammals such as the wildcat, the pine marten, red squirrel, and mountain hare, bird species including capercaillie, golden eagle, wood sandpiper and black grouse.
We highly recommend watching Ray Mears: Caledonian Pine Forest
Our location at Glenmore lodge places us right in the heart of the Caledonian forest. A few minutes walk from our base and accommodation and we are in the national park. We will have ample opportunities to explore and soak in this majestic and ancient landscape. We anticipate being delighted by a few rare and heart moving sightings as we teach our guide training course.
